Sin City is one of the most iconic places on Earth. Even its slogan — what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas — gives it a sense of irresistible mystique. It’s no wonder 40 million people flock to the city every year.

If you’re thinking about joining those people, then it’s worth preparing yourself beforehand. Read on for what you need to know before your trip to Las Vegas.

Always know your limits

It’s tempting to get sucked into the Vegas lifestyle. The excitement of the roulette tables, the delights of Cirque du Soleil, the adventure of this new and wild city — all these make for a magnetic experience that is difficult to say goodbye to.

But it’s important to know your limits, especially if you’re on a gambling vacation. Set limits, know your boundaries, and above all, don’t chase your losses. You can still enjoy Las Vegas, as long as you don’t exceed your limits.

It can get expensive

Vegas isn’t as pricey as it used to be. While prices for hotels and drinks aren’t as expensive as they used to be, Las Vegas can still be a costly vacation. It’s important that your budget allows for every eventuality.

For instance, many hotels have hidden fees. Hotel tax, parking, resort fees, and other charges make for a nasty surprise on your bill at the end of your stay.

And if you’re not from the US, it’s easy to forget their tipping culture. Allow for at least 10% tip every time you eat out. Make allowances for all these in your budget, and you’ll be prepared against any surprises.

It’s important that you save money for your trip to Las Vegas well in advance. For many non-US residents, Vegas is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. And if you want to enjoy it, it’s worth saving for.

Choose your travel date carefully

Las Vegas is a popular city, with countless events, expos, conventions, shows, and more happening throughout the year. And hotels and airline operators know this! Accommodation and flight prices fluctuate throughout the year according to demand.

Consequently, you should exercise caution when you choose your dates of travel. Even moving your flights a few days later or earlier can save you a significant amount.

Las Vegas is a hot desert city

It’s easy to forget that Las Vegas is slap bang in the middle of the desert. Sure, your hotel and favorite casino might have AC, but you’re still in the Nevada desert — and it gets hot.

Temperatures in Vegas can reach up to a scorching 117ºF. Combine that with lots of walking and, of course, lots of drinking, and that’s a recipe for dehydration. Stay dehydrated and keep cool — you’ll enjoy your holiday a whole lot more as a result.

Don’t drive on the Strip

The Vegas Strip is one of the most iconic sights in the world: bright, glittering, and stretching on for what seems like miles. But don’t be lured in at the thought of cruising the Strip in an open-top convertible — it’s almost always congested with traffic.

If you’re driving in Vegas, avoid the Strip altogether. Instead, head to Paradise or Koval on the Strip’s east side Industrial Road on the west. Alternatively, you could hop on one of the many double-decker buses running through the city. You could even grab the monorail for a quick route to your next destination.

Las Vegas is sure to be a trip you’ll never forget. Between trying your luck on the slots to checking out the wonders of Fremont Street, there is plenty to make your vacation unforgettable.

But a trip of this magnitude means it’s important you prepare yourself first. Follow the tips above and get ready for the vacation of a lifetime. Viva Las Vegas!
