Going on an adventure is exciting, and it can be doubly so when our dogs come with us. They can make our experiences more memorable, but they can also be motivators to stay active. However, to make your trip unforgettable for the best reasons, you need to plan ahead.

Where to Go

It might be tempting to book a cruise or go on a spa retreat, but why not go on an adventure with your pooch? If you are active-minded, you could trek to the Grand Canyon or head out on your own RV road trip. There are plenty of destinations that you and your pup could love and can be as local or remote as you prefer. Of course, take precautions, both for yourself and your pup, by doing plenty of research. After all, there are many places catered toward seniors, but not all will welcome canines. Your destination must be somewhere you both can enjoy.

Get Exploring

Wherever your destination, you can find places to help you stay active. For instance, you could go on walking tours, but there are also dog parks, nature trails, and beaches. You might even be able to take your pooch onto a golf course, as some of them can be animal-friendly. If you do decide to visit a dog park, check their rules and practice safety. Also, if there is a fight, distract the dogs rather than get between your pup and an aggressor. Remember, as well, that this is an unfamiliar environment, so ensure that they are microchipped, have an ID, and are vaccinated. Lastly, stock up on products that protect against parasites, as they can be a serious threat. By taking precautions, you can both be safe on your adventures.

Eat Well

It can be challenging to eat well on our travels since some hotels and airports may not meet our needs. That can be troubling when we want to stay healthy and fit, so, as a start, look for places that are near to grocery stores or healthy restaurants. Fortunately, this doesn't have to be expensive, as you could take advantage of senior discounts, such as those available to AARP members. If you have your mind set on a road trip, stock up on nutritious snacks, like peanut butter or hard-boiled eggs, and use a cooler for perishables.

Have the Equipment

With the right gear, staying active while enjoying your travels can be a breeze. In fact, all you might need are some resistance bands, suitable activewear, an exercise mat, and a supportive pair of sneakers. Your pup will also need appropriate active gear, especially if you plan on heading into the wilds. They can benefit from protective clothing, like a coat and booties, a reflective collar or one with lights, and portable bowls. Ultimately, your choices will depend on your destination, as different terrain and weather conditions may require specific items.

Keep Your Routine

One aspect of a healthy, fit lifestyle is the routine we keep at home. We have a predictable schedule, with regular times for eating, sleeping, and exercising. Unfortunately, when we travel, we may find these habits get thrown off, so it's important to be vigilant. After all, being well-rested helps us recover from physical activity, and keeps us healthy, motivated, and energized. Try to plan ahead, as knowing your itinerary will let you prioritize goals and track your overall wellness. This approach should extend to your pup, too, as their stress levels can increase without the schedule they are used to.

There may be much to plan, but all good trips need to be prepared for. By bringing along your dog, you can take on more active adventures and keep everyone happy. Now is the time to make new memories with your furry buddy.
