What’s the first thing that comes into your head when you hear the words “North Carolina?” It’s called the “Tar Heel State” because of the sheer number of people who have moved there throughout American history. The state is famous for its friendly people, relaxed atmosphere, fresh food, and beautiful coastline.
North Carolina has a rich and varied history. Pepsi-Cola, one of the biggest brands in the world, was developed in the State at New Bern. And then later, North Carolina cemented its legendary food status by playing host to the first ever Krispy Kreme outlet.
But what is there to do here? As a seasoned traveler, how can you enjoy this great state?
Check Out The Biltmore Gardens
The Biltmore Gardens are a great place if you’re the kind of person who loves indulging in nature. The gardens are home to some stunning plants, including orchids - great for all your horticulturalists out there. Staffed by friendly people, it’s an excellent place for a day out, especially during the spring and summer months when all the plants are in full bloom.
Eat The Local Food, Famed For Freshness
North Carolina is home to a large number of restaurants which specialize in serving locally-produced food. Here you’ll find all manner of meals, from dishes that freshly cook local vegetables to locally-reared steak. Many of the restaurants that specialize in local food hire chefs who create seasonally-inspired foods that the whole family will love.
Try Ice-Climbing
Things can get quite cold in North Carolina during the winter months. So much so that many of the state’s waterfalls completely freeze over. Never people to miss an opportunity for fun. North Carolinians have made their home state into the ice climbing capital of the world.
How, exactly, you may ask? It turns out that during winter, temperatures can fall so much that the water in waterfalls freezes solid. Once frozen, daredevil climbers take to the sheer face of ice with picks and ropes and try to hoist themselves to the top. North Carolina plays host to a large number of suitable waterfalls and attracts thousands of people every year.
Although ice-climbing is a lot of fun, it's not for the faint of heart. If you do decide to give it a try, take part with the help of a guide.
Watch NASCAR Racing In Charlotte
Charlotte, the biggest city in North Carolina, is famed for its Nascar racing scene. Drivers hurl themselves around a track at breakneck speeds, hoping to secure a victory.
Relax On Sandy Beaches
North Carolina is still a long way north of Miami, but that doesn’t mean that it is without world-class beaches: quite the contrary. The state has more than 300 miles of barrier islands and beaches, making it an ideal location for people who want to flop and relax on the sand.
The sandy beaches are also a favorite among adrenaline junkies who want to catch some East Coast surf. If there’s a storm blowing out to sea, waves in North Carolina can reach more than 10-foot tall.
