How many times have you watched a travel programme, and looked on with regret, wishing you had the courage to visit some of the countries highlighted? How many times have you started to create a bucket list, and then thrown it away because you know you will never visit any of those places? If you have done any of these things, and resigned yourself to the fact that you will never leave your comfort zone because of your 'what if' fears, then we have some advice to help you find your courage.

What if I get lost on my travels

It's the fear of the unknown. When considering heading to a place you have never been too, this is an understandable worry. However, this is where research comes in. By looking at one of the hundreds of travel sites online, you can find out as much as you can about a place, including where to go and what to do, and map out your journey accordingly. You can also download GPS apps onto your smartphone, so even if you do get lost, you will still be able to find your way back to where you want to be.

What if I lose my bags?

Not only can the airport lose your luggage (we don't know how that happens), but you might also lose your bags when away. There are a few ways to overcome this fear. For starters, carry important items in your hand luggage, so if your luggage does go missing, you don't need to worry about being without those vital things such as your passport and travel documents. Getting insurance is also helpful, or taking out a travel credit card, such as the Amex platinum edge credit card, as both will cover you in the event of something going missing. And when you're out and about, wear a travel belt when carrying money and smaller items of value, and if your bags do go missing (or get stolen), you will minimise some of the damage.

What if I have an accident?

The chances of an accident are slim, especially if you don't consciously put yourself in harm's way, but if you do get injured, all hope isn't lost. You should pack a travel first aid kit for starters. When researching places to visit, look for the nearest medical centres and make a note of emergency numbers. And remember the benefits of medical insurance, either through a dedicated insurance company or the type of credit card we mentioned earlier, as they will cover some of the expenses.

What if I get robbed?

This is a valid concern, but you can take safety measures. Check out this helpful guide, as there are tips on what to do (and what not to do) when away. And as we said earlier, you can wear a travel belt, meaning a lot of your valuable stuff will be hidden away from the sight of anybody meaning to do you harm. You might also consider visiting a safe country, as there is less risk of harm befalling you in certain parts of the world. When traveling for the first time, you should probably consider these places anyway.

Finally

Overcome your 'what if' fears with some other 'what ifs.'
