Moving to a new home is usually exciting but the process of moving is not, especially if you have to pack and move out in a hurry. If you have to move unexpectedly you are going to need all the help you can get to make the move hassle free. The good news is that we have helped many people pack and move on short notice so we know exactly how to go about it and we are here to help you make the tedious process short and less stressful. Based on professionalism and years’ experience helping people move out of their old homes on limited time, we have come up with seven insightful long distance moving tips to empower you with effective hacks that will make the process much easier.
1. Make a packing list
Proper preparations are vital if you have to do the packing fast and safely. A packing list will help you know exactly what to pack, in what order and at what time. It sets your packing up for success. Take some time to walk around your home, skim through the rooms and take note of what you would like to carry along to your new home and what you’d like to leave. Jot down everything that you’d want to carry. Classify the items on your list as “pack” “donate” and “trash”. Also, note everything that you will have to do before you move out of your old home. Afterwards, arrange the items you’d like to pack and the activities you’d like to do in order of priority.
2. Dispose anything you don’t need.
There are things which may not be of much value to you at your new home. You don’t have to pack them. If you are working with limited time, the less you pack the better. You may consider getting rid of everything you don’t need; it will make your baggage smaller, lighter and the move easier. On this, you have to think practically; if there are items you haven’t used for ages it’s probably means you can do without them--it doesn’t matter how much you are used to seeing them around. Alternatively, you could donate them.
3. Gather all the supplies needed for the move
If you have to move in limited time you are going to need all the accessories to make packing efficient. In order to save yourself time and stress involved in trying to figure out how to pack the items, gather supplies like boxes, markers, labels, tapes and scissors which make wrapping the items easy. Put these supplies at one place where you can retrieve them at your convenience. Even if you have to buy them on short notice on the eve of the move, do so. Moreover, many stores have a lot of accessories like boxes and are willing to give them out for free.
4. A moving essentials bag
There are items you can’t afford to leave behind. These are items which you will be using while on the move or items you’ll need when offloading luggage at your new home. They could also be items which could be of help in case of an emergency. Put aside a moving essentials bag with ideal items like your mobile phone, documents, receipts, chargers, toiletries, money, a few clothes, medication and first aid tools. While these are items which you may not want to forget even when you have all the time, it easy to forget them when you are moving in a hurry so having them in a duffel bag somewhere before you start packing will ensure that they are not left behind when you move.
5. Find a reliable moving company
There are many moving companies out there which would take your order on short notice. But even when working with limited time, you have to be keen when choosing a moving company. You can’t be too careful these days. Preferably, go for a company with years’ experience moving people, professional crew and a comprehensive insurance cover just to mention a few attributes. Skim through the customer reviews on the company’s online profile, see their terms and conditions, find out if they can help with packing and ask them how they like their payments processed; request for a quote if you can.
6. Ask for help from friends and family
Packing and unpacking is hectic particularly if they have to be done fast. If you can get some help from family and friends do so. Having many people to help you will help you use less energy, get the job done faster and keeps everything about the move on track. When people show up to help, give them clear instructions so that they all know exactly what they need to help you with and how you want them to do it. Having many people around also exposes you to a pool of ideas which you can tap in to make packing easy.
7. Make use of every space
If time is a factor you need to carry everything on one go so you probably want to make use of every space available to you. For instance, you can pack smaller items in larger items, fold clothes to occupy less space, fill in the spaces between items with smaller items, keep your socks in your shoes, put on more than a layer of clothes and so on.
