Whenever you go on a trip to a new place, there are two ways to explore. You could do all of the typical tourist things, or you can try to experience the place like a local. Although you can never truly see somewhere in the exact way a local person does, you can try to do some of the things that they typically do. Not only does it make your trip more authentic, but you could also save a lot of money. You'll avoid the tourist traps that are likely to charge more, and you'll get to spend time with local people, instead of just other travelers. The Cayman Islands are a beautiful place to visit, and Grand Cayman has some wonderful local secrets.

Rent Your Own Place

If you want to experience the island like a local, start by renting somewhere to stay. Don't stay in a hotel because you'll just be surrounded by other tourists. If you rent from Christopher Columbus Condos, you get your own private space. With a kitchen and barbecue grills, you can cook whenever you want - but you won't have to worry about cleaning up like at home because a maid will help you most days.

Look for Local Cuisine

Food is one of the best ways to explore a new culture. You'll find several different types of cuisine on Grand Cayman, but if you want to keep things authentic, you should look for Caymanian food. The food is much like Jamaican cuisine but also has British ties. Vivine's Kitchen is a top spot for local cuisine. You might also like places such as Kurt's Corner, Heritage Kitchen and The Grape Tree Cafe if you're looking for Caribbean food. Since you're on an island, there's obviously plenty of seafood to enjoy as well.

Get Local Guides to Show You Around

If you want to see the best bits of any destination, getting a local guide to show you around is a great idea. You can find plenty of local guides around Grand Cayman, and you can tour the island in different ways. For example, Cayman Safari Adventures only uses Caymanian guides to take you on driving excursions around the island. Many of the tour guides on the island who aren't true locals have been living there for many years and know the area well. So you can easily find a tour company that works for you, whether you want to dive, hike or drive.

Take the Kids for Some Fun

If you're looking for somewhere to take the kids, where they can make some local friends, you might be surprised to know that Grand Cayman has a skatepark. Black Pearl welcomes skaters, BMXers and even people doing parkour. The huge skatepark is the second largest in the world. While it hasn't always been in the best condition, it is now run by the Cayman Islands Skateboard Association who look after it. It's suitable for everyone from beginners to expert skaters. You can even catch some competitions there.

Live like a local on Grand Cayman and enjoy a sunny, adventurous trip. There's plenty to see and do.
